The influx of international students in Australian universities has become an increasingly prominent phenomenon in recent times. According to a report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), there are now over 500,000 international students enrolled in Australian universities, representing a significant increase from the approximately 80,000 international students enrolled in 1995. As per the reports in the Australian press, there has been a huge hike of 40% more applications at the University of Wollongong and 27% more applications in Queensland as compared to the highest number of International student applications recorded in 2019.
Additionally, international students generate a significant contribution to Australia’s economy, with the ABS estimating that they contribute more than $40 billion annually.
These students arrive from a broad range of countries, such as India, China, Vietnam, and the Middle East, and are attracted by the excellent quality of Australian education and research, as well as the dynamic and diverse culture.
Talking about India, Australian Universities have been experiencing 150% more applications from Indian students. On the other hand, Queensland University saw a hike of 40% more applications from Chinese people. Students from China have applied in huge numbers to many Australian Universities like the UNSW in Sydney which received 25% more applications this month. While some Universities saw a hike in applications from China some witnessed a drop in the number of applicants as well, Australian government suspects the closure of borders to be the reason behind this drop in numbers from Chinese applicants.
